John Edwards is not the first politician caught cheating on his wife, and he's certainly not the first to father an illegitimate child. Many politicians have even overcome the public taint of getting caught dipping the wick to go on to great things. Not this guy. He sinks deeper into the mire every day, dragging his dying wife, family and political associates with him. And still he won't come clean.

At first he denied the whole thing. While he was busy backpedaling, though, his cronies were busy moving his mistress, their infant daughter and the fall guy and his family to the West Coast. When Rielle was discovered living in a $3 million mansion, a tropical vacation to a mystery destination was booked, and she disappeared yet again. Same goes for the patsy, Andrew Young.

Despite the hundreds of thousands of dollars Edwards' staff is shelling out to keep all this under wraps, people are speaking out. Rielle's own sister says that baby Frances is the spitting image of John Edwards. The whole paternity test thing was a set-up, too; Edwards offered to submit to a paternity test, but only after instructing Rielle to refuse to participate.

In the meantime, my thoughts (and my heart) go out to Elizabeth Edwards, who reportedly chose to stay with her dirty rotten scoundrel of a husband rather than submit their children to the trauma of a divorce on top of the loss of a mother. She's a good woman who deserves much better than this.
