After months of breakup rumors, Ryan Phillippe, 32, and Reese Witherspoon, 30, have separated.

Sources spilling to TMZ say Ryan was threatened by his wife’s career. Phillippe is currently receiving acclaim for his role in the Clint Eastwood film Flags of Our Fathers. Witherspoon, who won the best actress Oscar for her performance in 2005's Walk the Line, will next be seen in Penelope, alongside Christina Ricci reports US magazine

In June, Australia’s NW reported that Reese’s insistence on working was causing a great deal of stress in her marriage.

A friend of the couple told NW, “Everything seemed great after [Reese] found out she was pregnant again. Ryan was thrilled and he thought Reese expecting another baby showed she had her priorities in place – with him and their family.� But Phillippe quickly learned that his intentions for the family were not the same as Reese’s. An insider said, “Reese announced she wants to keep working on her newest film…as well as starting filming another movie, Sports Widow in the months leading up to the birth,�

One mole chimed in, “Ryan went mad when he heard her plans. He told her she cared more about her career than him or the kids. He made her feel very guilty for wanting to work while she was pregnant.� Another source said, “Ryan thought that Reese getting pregnant made their arguing a thing of the past. But it was a false dawn – the peace didn’t last for long and things went downhill pretty quickly.�

Shortly after the pregnancy report, Reese sued a few tabloids, turns out she was just getting heavy around the middle. Still the breakup rumors continued.

In a statement to TMZ the couple say

“We are saddened to announce that Reese & Ryan have decided to formally separate. They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time.�

Reese Witherspoon has already hired divorce attorney, Robert Kaufman. There has been no word on the split, but sources say it was a long time coming. The two recently came out as a couple on 10/17. They have been married seven years.

Divorce papers have not yet been filed.
