Boy George sweeps up

Instead of quoting his hit with Culture Club, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,� Boy George was far more aggressive when dealing with the reporters covering his first day of community service in New York. "You think you're better than me? Go home. Let me do my community service…This is supposed to be making me humble. Let me do this. I just want to do my job," he said.

Boy George was sentenced to work in the Department of Sanitation for pleading guilty in March to falsely reporting a burglary in his downtown apartment. After police officers arrived at the scene of the so-called burglary, they found cocaine. Boy George’s sentence is for five days of work with the Sanitation department. Though he began his day sweeping the Manhattan streets, the media frenzy that ensued caused Sanitation officials to move his duty to a more enclosed area.

Sanitation spokesman Keith Mellis said, "Things outside in the street were a little chaotic. We'll see if there's some cleaning that can be done inside." Shortly after Boy George began sweeping a Sanitation parking lot, Deputy Sanitation Chief Albert Durrell explained, "[The move] is for everyone's safety.�
