Execution Watch : Stanley "Tookie" Williams |
|
|
 |
South Africa's Winnie Mandela has appealed to California governor Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to halt the execution of reformed gang leader Stanley "Tookie" Williams reports BBC news
"If we forgave what was done to us in South Africa, is not it possible to forgive?", asked the ex-wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
Last wednesday, the California Supreme Court turned down a bid by William's lawyers to reopen the Stanley Tookie William case without explanation, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. Defense attorneys had petitioned the high court earlier this month, alleging shoddy forensic testing and other errors may have wrongly sent Williams to San Quentin State Prison, where he is scheduled die by injection Dec. 13.
The high court voted 4-2 to deny Williams' petition.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will hear Williams' clemency petition at his Sacramento office Dec. 8., and if clemency is granted it would commute Williams' sentence to life without parole.
In 1971, Stanley Tookie Williams co-founded the infamous street gang the Crips. In 1981 he was convicted of the 1979 murders of Albert Owens, Thsai-Shai Chen Yang, Yen-I Yang and Yee Chen Lin during two separate robberies. During his trial, which unfolded against a backdrop of anti-gang hysteria, the prosecutor likened Stanley Tookie Williams to "a Bengal tiger" and his South Central home a jungle. He was found guilty by an all-white jury after all prospective black jurors were removed from the pool reports Yahoo News.
Williams, 51, denies committing the 1979 murders. While in jail, he has won praise for his anti-gang books, earning several Nobel Peace Prize nominations for his teachings. He has generated a public campaign calling for clemency.
Williams faces death by lethal injection on 13 December at San Quentin prison, north of San Francisco.

If he didn't murder people in cold blood he wouldn't be in this position in the first place. All the bleeding hearts trying to save this "reformed man" can go #*&!# themselves. Justice is due. Flip the swith so we can move on!

I agree. He did it. And it WAS NOT an all white jury, there were a few latinos and 1 black.
Why don't you report on how his friends said Tookie imitated the gurgling sounds of one of the dying victims?
Or that ANYONE can be nominated for a nobel peace prize, another famous nominee: Hitler.
Or that he had to spend six years in solitary b/c as he says. "I raised hell when I got here".
I am a raging liberal but some people deserve what they get. People that think this guy is innocent are fools.

stanley may be guilty of the crime in which he is in prison for however i feel that a greater injustice will be done by his execution. the salvation of those children that he may reach with his work far exceeds him being put to death.

FACT : Since its reinstatement in the 1970's, capital punishment has not yielded any evidence suggesting a deterrent effect.
FACT : There is significant data indicating that capital punishment produces the opposite of the desired effect. According to
the New York Times, states that implement capital punishment experience a murder rate 101% higher than states that do not implement it.

the death penalty is reserved for only very serious crimes and is meant to reflect the crime of the one being penalized. in practice the death penalty in the U.S. generally isnt even used for someone who's only committed one murder, its used for in cases of serial murders (like in Tookie's case) or other special circumstances and of course it was decided upon by a jury and a judge and we have an appeals process too.
it's unfortunate that our process has taken so long and that is something we certainly have to address. we need to make the punishment more quickly follow the crime. so the cause-effect is more clear to everyone.
i would argue that some politician stepping in during the last few minutes to commute a murder's sentence undermines the process we have in place to deal with the most violent criminals in the United States.

We as a class think that Tookie Williams should have the right to stay alive, in order to continue his good works. He inspires kids and young men to stay away from all gangs. He has really shown us that prison is not a place that we would want to be. If Tookie is reading this we as a class want to say, keep your head up and stay alive. We will be thinking of you and your family durning this time.
Thank you for your work,

Listen,BUSH has our kids killing innocent women and kids ever f@#$# day and no one is saying Sh#$ about it. Why should Tookie have to die for what he done. would it be any different if he was in army uniform?

This guy doesn't warrant special treatment, but the death penalty is for barbarians. You do something wrong you need to pay. I liked the picture though, it was designed to make him look like Buddha. Nice touch.

Actually, him dying now almost may serve to martyr him and boolster the disemination of his writings...

This article is just another blatant leftist propoganda piece cloaked in the guise of journalism. How is it that "joumalists" are constantly allowed to twist and spin facts to suit thier agenda?
To quote Mrs. Mendela reveals the liberal hyprocrisy of the media. This "forgiving" woman is best known for inventing and implementing the process of "Necklacing" hundreds of her political opponents. This "forgiving" practice involves binding a persons hands behind thier back, placing a tire around thier neck, filling it with gasoline, and igniting it. She is said to have gleefully watched her invention at work. The author would have us admire this woman and feel chastend by her petition for "forgiveness" This tripe of children's books and Nobel Peace prizes is simply the desperate acts of a brutal man trying to save his skin. That Nobel would recognize this person at all is suspect and disquiteing. Would anyone on that panel or the author of this article like to meet "Tookie" on a dark LA street some night?
Let this animal keep his well earned appointment with the afterlife.

I agree that if Stanley "Tookie" Williams is guilty of the crime he has been convicted of he should get what is coming to him. However, I am against the death penalty, life in prison is more suitable. I also feel that the justice system in the U. S. is not seen the same way for African Americans as it is for others, we have seen the devils teeth. Example, Harold Wilson-PA, who was exonerated ffor killing three people when racial discrimination was used during jury selection. The fact that new information has come forward wich may exonerate Mr. Williams from this heinous crime is cause for a retrial. To not grant him another trial and executing him would be the true miscarriage of justice.

Yet another case of being borne into the American dream mentality, the American ghetto culture. To pretend that any of us understand his plight, his upbringing, the environment he was subjected to (most likely, oppressively by unnamed government administrations), we would be calling ourselves fools. Stealing an entire race of people from another continent, forcing them into servitude, and then setting them "free" in a society that had always embraced class/race separatism, Tookie is now the posterboy for what sort of backlash we can & will continue to feel due to our past mistakes and lack of understanding and compassion. It's not as though he's planning a meeting on Florence anytime soon. The whole meaning behind our miniscule, over-rated lives is to redeem ones' mistakes and prevent ourselves (and others, if possible) from committing regrettable acts of the same caliber. I think maybe it was Jesus who said that, not me.

I think the Govoner should grant the clemmence and just make him spend the rest of his life in prison. He does not have that much longer to live. Im not a bleading heart type but since I am a Criminal Justice major my eyes have been opened up to a lot more then what I expected. And for those of you who say he was just the N word you only say that because you are ignorant in life. You need to get over it.

Vitamin D your a racist faggot, you should get lethal injection
Posted by: andrew | December 11, 2005 2:01 AM
If you do a little homework, you would find that, in fact, Williams was not convicted by an "all-white" jury. There were two non-white women on the panel. It's easy to be a changed man when changing 'might' save your own sorry life. No justice for his victims.

Lets think about this if you which everyone has or even thought about doin something not Godly had to pay for it with your live you would want forgiveness. To all thoses idiots out there who do not understand what he is goin though shut up. yeah if you did something yeah you would try to fake it but come on for over a decade to man has tried not even tried has done things you idiots can not even dream about. SAVE TOOKIE LIFE

i think that people forget what this man has done. he started a notorious gang that in itself has sucked generations of young people in and taught them to kill, deal drugs, and break the law. he was such a bad role model out of prison. also being convicted of murders, not just one but 4 of them. writing a bunch of kids books and talking nice and acting hopeful does not make anyone a better person. much less the fact that he cannot bring these people back to life. i believe that the us is one of the fairest countries. take china as an example, they had a year when they executed over 2500 people, many without a fair trial. we spend thousands each year on convicted criminals not only for shelter and food but also for court processes. just plain get over it, its not a racial thing but a fact that this man has taken 4 lives and has been a poor role model. by letting him live it will show others who look up to him that by being defiant to the law you can still live without having to worry about being put to death. for some, a prison is not much of a deterrent in itself.
they said the gun that killed the people were registered to tookie but it wasn't him who shot it. if you are gonna buy a gun, thats the game you play, you are responsible for what it does. its under your name. and he has not been able to disprove a thing which got him in trouble.
i know places like oakland and south central will protest if this execution goes through and if it does nothappen i would be in shock because they have protested about lesser things. and as always, 95% of the protesters and those lighting cars on fire and beating people up will not even know what all the ruckus is about.
i see where this is going and i am sorry but tookie should be laid down. he's had time to get things going the right way and he wasted it. children's books can be written by anyone and i would much rather my kids learn from a role model who did not have a crimincal history.
facts are facts and its too bad that those who are supporting a lost cause like this. our prisons should not be looked at as a place of rehabilitation but a place where people are kept to keep them from being able to go out and commit crimes again and again.
yes i pay my taxes and i believe that my money is well spent to house criminals in a common location. at some point in time executions will happen more and more because there is no option with a rapidly growing population.
rest in peace tookie, the end is near...
Posted by: john | December 12, 2005 12:38 PM
whatever you people think means nothing to the kids that relate to his work we see and understand his crimes but so many kids that live in run domn homes see him as a role model not for his crimes but for his ways in helping and trying to set an example for kids that have no hope and think that thier only way is gangs i bet that niether one of you on this web site that are talking s**** have never stepped foot in a ghetto or rundowned neighborhood you couldnt last one day in some of the kids shoes that have to make it on their own live in a place where you have no hope and live in a place where gangs in drugs are the only way for you to get by so if you've never been in that position i suggest you kepp your mouth shut becuase clearly you have no idea or obviously you had some one to pamper you all your life im not saying stanley isnt innocent but that if we forgive evryday in life we should forgive now and let him be in gods hands when its his time to go. we dont just decide when poeple are going to die thats gods job he decides when hes ready for us so clearly i think if we execute him we are doing wrong
Posted by: valerie romero | December 12, 2005 4:45 PM
i think that all you people who say that he did it just because he was a ni**ge are f@ggots and deserve the death penalty themselves. okay ya tookie did some bad things in his past but i beleive he deserves a second chance and that he is reformed. for all of you that have doubt in that, why? why would he go through all that work and write books and tell people to stay away from gangs, be released and do everything he said not to. i can see why people want tookie to die. he killed four people. but your only looking at that one side. you have to look at the other side and realise that he is a totally changed man. give him a second chance. he's proven that he deserves one. to all the people who disagree just because he's balck, go kill youself. the worlds better off without you. LET TOOKIE LIVE!!!!!!
Posted by: Keithono | December 12, 2005 6:31 PM
see folks, i told you he was going to be served the right way. it has been announced by the governor that he will not grant clemency for this seasoned killer. it just would not be the right thng to do. he did not commit crimes because he is black but because he is a criminal. there are two types of people on this planet, those who skirt their existence by commiting illegal acts and try to justify them by saying their crimes were commited for one reason or another and those who live by the law and work hard for their needs and wants. they are the ones who are true to the american spirit of hard work and rewards. god bless america, tookie, you will soon be meeting your maker.... don't cry. be a big boy as they walk you through the corridor and down the green mile like you were when you shot those innocent people just to feed your greed and hunger for things you did not work for or deserve.

Posted by: Ramon Teliciano | December 12, 2005 8:31 PM
It has been said that Tookie will die but you know i think that he deserves a seconds chance and i think that he has changed!! And to you Ramon Telianco i think that you are tha bastard!!! and to tha rest of you i think that you just have no idea what tha damn ghetto is its a place where there my be someone shot everyday and you hear driveby shootings so i'm thinking none of you know wat this it means to live in tha ghetto. This guy has changed lives of people not only in tha prison but on the outside of the world. But you think about it wouldn't you rather one of you kinds read a book then to go sell drug. i don't know about u ppl but iwould want my kids to read about that Tookie wrote and make tha best of it and learn something and not make the same mistake that Tookie made years ago. But since Tookie is being put to death i just would like to say to him i am sure that you have regretted what you have done to those ppl and you wish you could go back well i forgive you and RIP and may God be with you!!! God Bless

i think they could have forgave tookie for what he done. the man had already done 20 or more year in jail. he could have just been gave life without.killing him only made thing worse.
Posted by: charles thomas | December 13, 2005 1:45 PM
it was wrong what he did but people shouldn't be ignorant about the situations because regardless of what yall opinions are he still had a good heart and took time to tell everyone through his books and no one was there to witness anything so don't nobody know the truth and not enogh evidence to prove it was him.I think they shouldn't have executed him that's sad what the worl is coming to today people need to get a grip on reality either you live life right and go to heaven or live it wrong and go to hell think about it before you do something stupid. holla back

Whites shouldn't have a say in his verdict. He DID NOT do it. Oh and few latinos and one black couldnt change the outcome of the verdict of the jury. -"convicted of the 1979 murders of Albert Owens, Thsai-Shai Chen Yang, Yen-I Yang and Yee Chen Lin during two separate robberies"- Three of those names sound like there Chinese. Why should we care Chinese people kill female babies all the time if they got a deformity or the people have more than three children. Whats three dead Chinese people in that retrospect. The fact that he was convicted of murder though is something that needs to be taken care of. He served his time and he redemned himself. He stopped a lot of violence that would of continued to happen here in the US. He saved more lives than he was convicted of taken. Some of the peopel who have commented used the quote "An eye for an eye" as in he killed someone and he should pay, well he saved more people than he was convicted of killing so by using that quote you should be saying that he deserved to have his life spared. Oh and even if did murdered people in cold blood your blood is just as cold cause your saying to just murder him for something you have no idea about. -*A white girl* PS.Fuck you others white when you say racist bullshit. You make me not proud of being white when all your're all pieces of white shit.
