Fox has decided to keep its blockbuster talent competition, "American Idol," on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when it returns in January. For weeks now, the show's nearly 30 million fans have been buzzing over reports about a possible move to Thursday night reports Washington Post.
"Despite fevered guessing by industryites and some overeager media outlets, Fox Wednesday said 'American Idol' will remain on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when it returns for its fifth season in January," trade paper Variety reported yesterday afternoon on its Web site.
Fox entertainment president Peter Liguori said an "Idol" move was "seriously considered" but ultimately decided against.
"We decided that when you have the top one-hour and half-hour shows on television, it's best to keep them on the nights they're on."
The fifth cycle of "Idol" kicks off Jan. 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. with a two-hour installment Tuesday and an hour-long show the next night.
"24" returns Jan. 15 and 16 from 8-10 each evening. Fox Entertainment President Peter Liguori promised viewers "nonstop excitement" with "Idol" and five months of original episodes of "24."
"It takes discipline to hold back '24' and 'American Idol,'" Liguori said in a statement, "but doing so allows us to strengthen our schedule across the week."
Fox's plans for "Idol," which this week announced a new long-term deal with judge Simon Cowell, are said to have influenced NBC's plans for its midseason schedule overhaul, which is expected to be unveiled Thursday reports Reuters.
