Mariah Carey scooped just one prize at the American Music Awards last night
(22.11.05) - despite being up for four gongs.
Carey won the night's first award for favourite soul/R&B female artist, but lost the Favourite Female Pop/Rock category to Gwen Stefani.
Carey opened the ceremony with a performance of Don't Forget About Us before accepting her only award.
"Thank you so much for the warmth and the love," she told the audience.
Actor-singer Will Smith won favourite male pop/rock artist, while Missy Elliott was named favourite female rap/hip-hop artist for the second consecutive year.
"I got to thank God because that's my inspiration for everything that I do," she said, dedicating her award to the late singer Aaliyah.
Comedian Cedric the Entertainer hosted the three-hour ceremony at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium.
Nominees were determined by radio airplay and sales, with winners chosen from a poll of 20,000 US music fans.

prestigious gongs.
Other Performances included Gwen Stefani, Keith Urban and the
Rolling Stones, who performed via a satellite link-up from Utah.
