The stars of American television were out in full force at the 57th edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards which took place last night in Los Angeles. Not surprisingly, it was a close battle for top honours between regular Emmy favourite HBO and ABC.
HBO picked up seven awards . Its movie The Life and Death of Peter Sellers with Geofrey Rush in the title role picked up three awards. ABC which gained a lot of ground last year followed with six awards. Felicity Huffman won for her role as a harried mother in Desperate Housewives.
"I've turned into one of those actresses and I'm sorry," Huffman said as she became teary-eyed at the start of her acceptance speech.
She thanked "the women of Wisteria Lane", co-stars Cross and Hatcher and Eva Longoria.
Charles McDougall won an Emmy for directing the pilot episode. JJ Abrams won the Emmy for directing the action adventure show Lost which deals with a group of plane crash survivors.
Brad Garett and Doris Roberts won awards for acting in the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Everybody Loves Raymond, also beat Desperate Housewives for best comedy series.
After winning, Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal joked: "It's nice to remember the elderly. Thanks. We're grateful and shocked."
More surprising was Patricia Arquette's win for best drama actress in Medium. She had strong competition from Glenn Close ( The Shield), Frances Conroy ( Six Feet Under) and Jennifer Garner ( Alias).
