Chip giant, Intel Corp. is set to unveil a huge change in the underlying technology of its computer chips, one that emphasizes power efficiency and multitasking as much as raw speed reports Reuters
Details of the new chip designs -- along with information about Intel's shift -- are planned for the company's Developer Forum in San Francisco at the end of August.
The chips, codenamed Conroe for desktops, Merom for notebooks and Woodcrest for servers, should be available in the middle of 2006.
In materials released ahead of the gathering, the company said the new technology will allow for energy-efficient chips that can be used in sleeker boxes than today's often clunky desktop machines.
Though the new chips will be structurally different, the changes are likely to be transparent to PC users, who would continue to be able to run similar software packages, including Microsoft Windows.
Some analysts see the move to design more efficient processors as being tied to the company's push toward offering more dual-core chips. Dual-core processors, once limited to high-end enterprise servers, are now seen as a way to increase the processing speed of desktop computers without raising power requirements reports Tech News World.
